Have you ever heard a story about an injustice or an account of human suffering and wanted to say or do something about it that would make a difference? Thousands of members of
the United Church of Christ are "doing justice, loving kindness,
and walking humbly" with their God by speaking out with conviction
and passion about ending hunger, working for peace, creating and sustaining
excellent schools for all of God's children, and eradicating racism.
The United Church of Christ's ucctakeaction.org
provides help to those who want to raise their voices on behalf of
others. One UCC member recently
went to the ucctakeaction.org
Web site in order to encourage her state representative to make sure
that their state provides school systems that are equitable for all
of God's children. She spoke of her concerns about her own children's
school but also recognized that conditions were far worse in other
schools in the state. Speaking as a member of the United Church of
Christ, she called for justice and care for all our children. In response,
her representative questioned the accuracy of her "perception"
and suggested that she and her church go on a "fact-finding mission"
about public education Fortunately the United
Church of Christ is already engaged in exactly that: the Public Education
Task Force of Justice and Witness Ministries goes on school visits
that provide its members--and, by extension, all UCC members--with
insights into the needs, conditions, and hopes of our public schools.
So far these school visits have taken the task force members into
public school system in northern Ohio and in Phoenix, Arizona, and
more are planned for the months ahead. Your support of Our Church's
Wider Mission makes it possible for the United Church of Christ to
support and empower its members to speak with passion, conviction,
and knowledge as they proclaim the good news of the gospel for all
of God's children. |
